Eligibility Criteria

The Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award is specifically tailored to recognize and support fintech startups that demonstrate great potential in their early stages. To be eligible for this prestigious award, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Private Corporation: The applicant must be a privately held company.
  2. Seed Stage: The fintech startup should be at the seed stage, meaning it has not yet raised a Series A funding round.
  3. Minimum Viable Product (MVP) with Market Traction: Applicants must have developed a minimum viable product that has gained some market traction, showcasing the potential for growth and success in the fintech industry.
  4. Evidence of Growth Potential: The startup must be able to provide evidence of its ability to hire and expand its team, which is crucial for sustainable growth.
  5. Domain Expertise and Established Team: The founders should have domain expertise in the fintech industry and have built a growing team that supports the company’s vision and goals.
  6. Revenue or Clear Forecast: The applicant must either have revenue or present a clear and realistic forecast for generating revenue in the near future.
  7. Connection to the Calgary Region: The fintech startup should be located in Calgary or have a strong value proposition that presents significant opportunities and benefits for the region. This connection can include potential economic impact, job creation, or collaboration with local businesses and organizations.

Award Process

The Digital Commerce Calgary Fintech Award follows a structured process to identify and support Canada’s most promising fintech startups:

  1. Application and Selection: Startups submit applications, which are reviewed by an expert panel of judges.
  2. Top 25 Startups: Selected startups participate in virtual fintech-focused sessions and complete a business evaluation assignment.
  3. Top 10 Startups: Based on evaluations, finalists receive pitch coaching and attend in-person workshops and events in Calgary.
  4. Top 5 Startups: The most promising startups advance to a live-pitch session at the awards ceremony.
  5. Top 3 Startups: Based on their performance, winners receive prizes totaling $300,000 CAD.
